The 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony was formerly scheduled to take place on 31st January 2022, and finally took place on Sunday night (3rd April 2022) in Las Vegas. South African comedian Trevor Noah returned as this year’s host; he previously hosted the award show in 2021. At this year’s award, American Singer-Songwriter Jonathan Michael Batiste is, popularly known as “Batiste,” was the most nominated artiste with 11 nominations. Doja Cat, H.E.R., and Justin Bieber all got eight nominations each.
Grammy 2022: Surprises and Highlights
In November 2021, when the Grammy announced the 2022 nominations. Nigerian Afrobeat singer Wizkid scored two nominations. He was nominated for “Best Global Music Performance” for his 2021 song “Essence,” which featured Nigerian-Singer, Tems. He also earned a second nomination for “Best Global Music Album” for the deluxe version of his 2020 studio album- Made in Lagos. The Deluxe version was released in 2021 and featured appearances from American Singer-Songwriter Justin Bieber and Buju.

The nomination was predicted and expected to be Wizkid’s first-ever Grammy Award, given that in 2020 fellow Nigerian Afrobeat powerhouse Burna Boy will become one of the first Nigerian Afrobeat artists to win a Grammy Award. However, before the live show started on Sunday night, the Best Global Music Album winner was announced. Beninese singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo won the category instead. Following Kidjo’s win, music lovers and critics express their thoughts on Wizkid losing not just one but two categories at this year’s award.

Bastille emerged as one of the biggest winners of the night. The Singer-songwriter won in five categories: ‘ Record Of The Year,’ ‘Album Of The Year,’ ‘Best American Roots Performance, Best American Roots Song’ and ‘Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.’

Singer and Songwriter Olivia Rodrigo followed as the second biggest winner of the night, snagging three trophies for “Best New Artist,” Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album.
American R n B duo Silk Sonic followed next, winning “Song Of The Year”and “Record Of The Year.”
Singer and Rapper Doja Cat became a first-time Grammy winner for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Kiss Me More”, which featured S.Z.A. Their acceptance cameo for the award was one of the most comical highlights of the ceremony, S.Z.A. showed up on stage in crutches revealing she had fallen off her bed earlier before the ceremony. At the same time, Doja Cat was close to missing her win after going on a bathroom break a few minutes after she was announced as the winner in the category.
Jazmine Sullivan also became a first-time Grammy winner. The singer won “Best R&B Album for her 2020 album “Heaux Tales.”
The biggest highlight of the award ceremony was when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a pre-recorded speech concerning the war going on in Ukraine. He urges everyone to support in any way they can. Following the pre-recorded speech, John Legend performed a hymn-like new song titled ‘Free’ alongside poet Lyuba Yakimchuk, Ukrainian singer Mika Newton, and bandura [zither] player Siuzanna Iglidan, who is also from Ukraine.

Lady Gaga delivered a heartfelt tribute performance to the late American Singer Tony Benett. Other performances at the ceremony were Silk Sonic [Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak], who opened the award show, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, B.T.S., J Balvin, Billie Eilish, Brandi Carlile, Nas, Chris Stapleton, Justin Bieber, H.E.R, Carrie Underwood, and the Brothers Osborne also performed at the ceremony.
In another tribute, the award ceremony took an extended moment to honor Taylor Hawkins, the Foo Fighter’s drummer, who passed away about a week ago while on tour with the band in Colombia. The tribute featured a compilation of photos and video footage from his career as a drummer with the band. Taylor Hawkins joined the Foo Fighters in the ’90s and died at age 50.
Host of the night, Trevor Noah, in his opening monologue at the ceremony, referred to Will Smith’s Oscars outburst a few weeks ago. He quotes, ‘We’re going to be dancing, we’re going to be singing, we’re going to be keeping people’s names out of our mouths’.
