DaCosta was born on November 15, 1982, in New York City, and she grew up in the Harlem neighborhood of Upper Manhattan. Yaya DaCosta is of Brazilian, Nigerian, and Black-American ethnicity. Her mother was Orundun Dacosta Johnson, while her father was Carl Awolowo Johnson.
