The president said the state of the nation after his inauguration made him consider leaving the country
President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed he nearly bolted from Nigeria in 2016 due to the deplorable state of the economy, according to the Sun. This was in part due to the state of affairs he inherited from the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, the president claimed.
Buhari was speaking during an interactive session with the Nigerian community in Abidjan, Cote d’ Ivoire.
He says: “When I came, what I found out is terrible. It was absolutely terrible.”
The president was quick, though, to laud his government, which he noted not only pulled the country out of economic brink but also stabilised the polity and restored peace. This was despite meeting an empty treasury and a massively declined oil revenue. He attributed the achievement to God
In his words: “We are lucky in Nigeria that we have been able to survive 2016. Honestly, I told some people close to me that I was thinking of which country to run to if things got out of hand.
“Between 1999 and 2014, I have said it several times in Nigeria, Nigeria had never got so much revenue like it did at that time. But then, when we came, the price of oil went down to $28 per barrel from an average of $100 per barrel at the production rate of 2.1 million barrel per day.
