At the just-concluded African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) 2019, three Nigerian films emerge winners in five of the 26 possible categories.
It was a poor performance given the hype and high expectations that Nigerians had going into the award. Perhaps the expectations were misplaced or maybe not and it was just a matter of the competition being too strong. Either way, it was a wakeup. The stakes are higher and African filmmakers continue to strive for excellence and to be able to compete with their peers globally. Nevertheless, it was a disappointing outing.
Meanwhile, here is a breakdown of the Nigerian films that brought honours to Nollywood at AMAA 2019. We have also included the trailers and a short description of the films in case you haven’t seen them.
List of the awards won by Nollywood films at the AMAA 2019:
1. King of Boys
King of Boys emerged the Nollywood king at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA 2019) that took place last night.
The film garnered three awards including the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) award for Best Nigerian Film, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Adesua Etomi-Wellington and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Sola Sobowale (Eniola).
While King of Boys won in three categories, two of the categories was in personal categories, Bst Actress in a Supporting role for Adesua Etomi Wellington and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Sola Sobowale. The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) was strictly for Nigerian films, so the film did not compete with any of the films to which it lost to in the other categories in which it was nominated. In a way, one might say, NFVCB award is the category that ensures that at least one Nollywood film will come out a winner during AMAA, as long as the category continues to exist in its present format.
