Madagascar re-imposes lockdown following surge in COVID-19 cases

Two months after the country lifted lockdown in the country, including allowing children to return to school, the country has now imposed a new lockdown to contain a surge in COVID-19 cases.

This lockdown includes strong measures: only one member of a family is allowed to be outside from 6 am to noon. This lockdown is expected to continue until at least 20 July.

For the past few days, Madagascar has recorded hundreds of new cases of Coronavirus daily, the latest being 216, a record for the country.

Currently, 1621 people are living with the virus out of over 23 thousand people who have been tested.

So far, Madagascar has recorded 26 COVID-related deaths since the outbreak started.

This is coming a few months after the country engaged in a media battle with the World Health Organization (WHO) over their COVID-19 cure.

The cure, called COVID Organics was made with the Artemisia plant and Madagascar has always insisted that the drug works perfectly to cure and prevent COVID-19.

WHO called for tests into the drug which Madagascar rejected, saying that the organization was trying to dismiss the cure.
