Check out Uganda’s ridiculous social media tax bill

The social media bill that the Ugandan parliament approved and passed a month ago, has now gone into effect.

The Excise Duty (Amendment) Bill includes a tax on social media usage, which means Ugandans will have to pay money to the government on days that they access social media platforms.

The country’s president, Yoweri Museveni, wrote a letter to the treasury stating that social media encouraged gossip that was costing Uganda time and income. So from July 1, Ugandans have to pay a 200 shilling ($0.05, N20) levy per day to use social media platforms. The government of Uganda expects you to pay your Taxes before you can do anything on any social media app.

What do you think? Should we implement something similar in Nigeria?
