AC Milan throw Torino out of Italian Cup in explosive shootout

AC Milan dumped fellow Serie A side Torino out of the Italian Cup on Tuesday after winning the clash with a penalty shootout following a stalemate in regular time.

The Serie A leaders welcomed Zlatan Ibrahimovic back to the starting lineup but even he could not find a way past the opposition’s defence as the match dragged beyond regulation time.

Torino actually tabled a better performance this time out than they did when they faced Milan some days ago. They put together a couple of chances that required Ciprian Tatarusanu’s best to keep out.

Milan also put Torino’s shot-stopper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic to the test through efforts from Rafael Leao and Davide Calabria.

Gianluigi Donnarumma who was n the bench managed to receive a red card after protesting against the referee’s decision in the 70th minute.

The game would not have ended in a penalty had Brahim Diaz scored in the 86th minute when he had the chance. Both teams scored their first three of their penalties but Tatarusanu denied Rincón in the fourth penalty round before Romagnoli then stepped up to put Milan 4-3 up.

Torino’s keeper scored their fifth penalty and Hakan Calhanoglu sealed the win for the San Siro landlords.
