Today in History: The first African American woman goes into space

On September 12, 1992, Mae C. Jemison, became the first African American woman to travel in space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

C. Jemison is an American engineer, physician and NASA astronaut. After medical school and a brief general practice, Jemison served in the Peace Corps from 1985 until 1987, when she was selected by NASA to join the astronaut corps.

She was a Mission Specialist on STS-47 which was the 50th space flight of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. She spent over 190 hours in space, where she conducted experiments on weightlessness and motion sickness.
