Today, Monday, 9th October, the 282nd day of 2018. There are 83 days left in the year.
On this date:
1. In 2012, Malala Yousafzai was shot
Pakistani women’s rights activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate was shot 3 times by a Taliban gunman while on a bus in the Swat District, after taking an exam. Malala and two other girls were shot in an assassination attempt in retaliation for her activism.
Malala was hit in the head with a bullet and remained unconscious and in critical condition at the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, but her condition later improved enough for her to be transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, UK. The attempt on her life sparked an international outpouring of support for her.

2. In 1962, Uganda becomes independent
Uganda gained independence from Great Britain as a parliamentary democratic monarchy, with traditional kingdoms Ankole, Buganda, Bunyoro and Toro receiving federal status and a degree of autonomy.
Buganda, under the leadership of Sir Edward Mutesa, was the most powerful kingdom. Milton Obote the leader of the socialist Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) became the first prime minister of the newly independent Uganda. In 1963 Uganda became the Republic of Uganda, with Mutesa II as first (largely ceremonial) president.
