Fifa has released it’s ten-man shortlist for the The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2019 award.
According to the global football body, the shortlist is “based on (players’) respective achievements during the period from 16 July 2018 to 19 July 2019 inclusive.
The list is “compiled by a panel of experts in men’s football,” Fifa says on its website.
Mohammed Salah of Egypt and Liverpool FC teammate, Sadio Mane, are the only Africans to make the cut. And, of course, perpetual shortlistees, the duo of Cristino Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are among those on the honour roll.
Here is the full shortlist:
- Cristino Ronaldo – Portugal,
- Frenkie De Jong – Netherlands
- Matthijs de Ligt – France
- Harry Kane – England
- Eden Hazard – Belgium
- Sadio Mane – Senegal
- Kylian Mbappe – France
- Lionel Messi – Argentina
- Mohammed Salah – Egypt
- Virgil van Dij – Netherlands
Fans can vote for their favourite player to win the award. Each fan can vote for up to three players. The first choice gets five points, the second choice gets three points while the third choice gets one point. And according to Fifa, fans’ votes count equally as those of key experts selected from among sports “journalists, national team coaches and captains.
Following the votes, the list will be whittled down to three players before the winner is revealed at The Best FIFA Football Awards show in Milan on 23 September.
