If you’ve chopped onions before, you’ve probably noticed that the smell could stick around on your hands, and soap doesn’t do much to get it off.

This trick actually works with both onions and garlic, whose smells can be neutralized with stainless steel. All you need to do is rub your hands with a stainless steel object (like a spoon, knife, or even the edge of your sink) under cold water, as if the spoon were a soap. In fact, we have metal soap bars made for this very purpose.

Another way to remove stubborn onion odours from your hands is to use table salt or lemon. Just rub them into your hands and rinse with water.
