Kenyan, David Barmasai Tumo wins the Lagos City Marathon [photos+video]| See all winners

No, he’s not Nigerian. The first person to cross the finish line at the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is Kenya’s David Barmasai Tumo.

He not only won the race, but he also set a new record by finishing in two hours, 10 minutes and 20 seconds. Last year, Ethiopian Sintayehu Legese won the race in two hours, 17 minutes and 28 seconds.

The 42km race started at the National Stadium, Surulere, and finished at Eko Atlantic.

31-year-old David is a long-distance runner who specializes in marathon running. He has a personal best of 2 hours, seven minutes and 18 seconds.

He also won the 2011 Dubai Marathon and came fifth at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. David will leave Lagos with the grand prize of $50,000.

First and Second runners up will receive $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.

In the same vein, Kenyan, Sharon Jemutai Chirop was the first woman to finish the race, winning $50,000 for herself.

Sharon is a long-distance runner who specializes in marathon running. She won the 2012 Boston marathon. She finished the race in two hours, 31 minutes and 38 seconds.

The first Nigerian to cross the finish line, however, is Kefas Williams from Warri, Nigeria with a personal best of two hours 33 minutes and 57 seconds.

He finished the 42km race as the first Nigerian to cross the line with a time of two hours 58 minutes and one second. He will be rewarded with three million Naira for this feat.
