Ferran Torres to Manchester City, a done deal

Manchester City have gotten their man Ferran Torres from Valencia on a five-year deal for a reported initial fee of £20.8m plus bonuses.

He becomes City’s first summer signing with Pep Guardiola still looking to strengthen the side further. City moved in to swoop the winger after Leroy Sane left for Bayern Munich last month.

The Spanish U-21 rose through the ranks at Valencia’s renowned academy and helped the La Liga outfit finish ninth while also scoring four times in 34 appearances last season.

He is considered one of Spain’s brightest young prospects and a huge blow to Valencia losing one of its brightest talents as they needed to sell some players to balance their books, even before the financial impact of coronavirus.

Torres told Man City’s club website: “I am so happy to be joining City. Every player wants to be involved in attacking teams and Manchester City are one of the most attacking in world football.

“Pep (Guardiola) encourages a really open, aggressive style, which I love, and he is a manager with a proven track record of improving players. To have him overseeing my development is a dream.

“City have won plenty of trophies in the last 10 years and I hope I can play a role in continuing that success.”

Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football, adds: “We have followed Ferran’s progress closely and have been very impressed.

“He is young and still developing, but his technical qualities are exactly what we are looking for in a winger. He is quick, direct, can create space with one movement, and is capable of producing match-winning moments.”

Torres debuted as a teenager for the senior team during the 2017-18 season, featuring 13 times that term. The following season he scored three times in 37 games in all competitions as Valencia won the Copa del Rey.

City are also in the market for center-backs this summer and have had a £41m offer for Nathan Ake accepted by Bournemouth.
