The tears do not start developing until toward the end of the first month, although some can develop from 2 weeks onwards.
Some babies don’t produce enough from their tear glands until at least a couple of weeks after birth, some take just a month, others take even up to 6 months.
This development does not mean the babies will have dry and irritating eyes. Every baby is born with basal tearing, that produces enough moisture to lubricate and protect the eye - which means there’s no excess to roll down your baby’s cheeks.
