Ahead of today’s Champions League final, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), along with the Egypt Football Association (EFA) has announced that spectators will not be allowed at the game, despite earlier reports this week suggesting otherwise.
After deliberating with the Egyptian FA, Africa’s football governing body has issued an official statement that they have come to a conclusion that the final involving Al Ahly and Zamalek will go on inside the Cairo International Stadium, but without fans.
As revealed on CAF’s website, the decision was taken as a precaution against the spread of Covid-19, which has affected several other sporting events globally.
The heavyweight encounter between two of Egypt’s biggest teams is set to make history as the first CAF Champions League final to be contested with both teams from the same country. Albeit behind closed doors, fans in Egypt and the rest of Africa will be keeping tabs when the game kicks off tonight at 19:00 (WAT).
Both teams have 13 CAF Champions League titles between them, with Al Ahly hoping to win their ninth title, while their arch-rivals Zamalek are eyeing a sixth in what could be their first title since 2002.
