Marvel Boss Kevin Feige has confirmed that the sequel to Black Panther will hit the cinemas on 6 May 2022.
Feige made the revelation at Disney’s D23 Expo held on Saturday at Anaheim Convention Center, California. Also, according to Director Ryan Coogler, the team is “taking their time with it” in order to get it right.
A sequel to Black Panther is really a no brainer given the success of the first film, which starred Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa who was eventually crowned as ruler and protector of Wakanda after fighting off competition from Michael B Jordan’s Erik Killmonger and Winston Duke’s M’Baku.
Asked by Entertainment Weekly about plans for a Black Panther sequel, Feige replies:
“[I have] nothing specific to reveal, other than to say we absolutely will do that.
“One of the favourite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a Part One and talking and dreaming about what we would do in a Part Two.
“There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first Black Panther. We have ideas and a pretty solid direction on where we want to head with the second one.”
Kevin Feige added that he’s been heartened by the public’s interest in the greater mythology of Wakanda, making it, at least theoretically possible, that supporting characters like Shuri (Letitia Wright) and the Dora Milaje could get their own spin-offs.
“There’s that moment where all of the ancestors come behind T’Chaka [in the film],” he explains. “We would joke and go, ‘I want to see… what’s their story? What’s that story? Who was Bashenga, the first king of Wakanda? Who’s that third to the left, behind T’Chaka? What was their story in Wakanda in 1938? That would be cool‘.
“It all starts as conversations like that. The more audiences want to see these stories, the more opportunities we have to explore different places and time.”
Wakanda fans, are you excited? We definitely are!
