The Matrix 4 trailer and title, released at the ongoing CinemaCon, have heightened the anticipation of filmgoers worldwide.
Couple this news with the recently debuted “Spider-Man: No Way Home” trailer, and you can tell that 2021 most anticipated movies will have a lot of work to do to please viewers.
Several months ago, we entered the year 2020 with so much enthusiasm and expectations. There was a lot to look forward to for film enthusiasts, as the year had an array of long-anticipated blockbusters lined up. COVID was in a corner looking at us all and probably shaking its head at our sheer ignorance like, “It’s the cluelessness for me!”.
Barely two months into the new year, the pandemic hit full force, clearing everything in its path, including the scheduled release of several films. It halted productions across the globe, and the release of already concluded projects was also postponed. Ultimately, many initial “2020 releases” automatically received 2021 dates.
Although 2021 has indeed seen several great theatrical releases such as “Wonder Woman 1984”, “A Quiet Place Part II”, “Cruella”, “F9”, “Black Widow”, “Jungle Cruise”, “The Suicide Squad”, and many others, there is yet a good deal of blockbusters to look forward to, some carryovers from 2020, and others new.
If you are an avid film lover, then just like others everywhere else in the world, you must know some of the yet to be released, most anticipated films of 2021. Keep reading to see what the rest of the year promises in terms of theatrical releases, and of course, the scheduled timelines.
Top Gun: Maverick
Almost four decades after Tony Scott’s 80s classic, “Top Gun”, comes this sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick”, from relative newcomer Joseph Kosinski. In this instalment, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell keeps pushing the envelope after years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators. He must soon confront the past while training a new squad of graduates for a dangerous mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice. Fans have been teased with behind the scene videos and teasers showing Tom Cruise pulling outrageous stunts in aviator sunglasses, and we simply can’t wait to gobble it all up. From an initial July 2019 release date, “Top Gun: Maverick” is now billed to fly out on 19 November 2021.

Dune
Arguably, the most anticipated film of 2020 was this star-studded Dennis Villeneuve-helmed remake of the 1984 film of the same title. It follows Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding. He must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, only those who can conquer their own fear will survive. Glimpses of the film that has been shown to the public have done nothing short of upping the thirst for its release. It is expected to finally come through in October.

House of Gucci
“House of Gucci is” an upcoming crime thriller chronicling the events in the lead-up to, and aftermath of, the murder of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), the Gucci family heir, by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga). Photos of this one have been released too, and they tickle the soul. On the one hand, you have the extravagance of Lake Como and the Italian Alps. On the other, there is a turtleneck-donned, moustached Adam Driver. A vibe! Come 24 November, we will troop out in numbers to witness it.

Last Night in Soho
Edgar Wright is back! And this time, with an upcoming British psychological horror film. It follows an aspiring fashion designer who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s. There, she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer. However, glamour is not all it appears to be, and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something far darker. It features “The Queen’s Gambit” star Anya Taylor Joy in the main role. “Last Night in Soho” dawns in November 2021.

Spider-Man: No Way Home
The third “Spider-Man” film in the MCU canon already has fans in an uproar over the continuous rumours of multi-Spidermen. We are expected to see familiar faces from previous Spider-Man iterations make an appearance, including the confirmed return of Alfred Molina (who played Doctor Octopus in Tobey Maguire’s “Spider-Man 2”) and Jamie Foxx (who played Electro in Andrew Garfield’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2”). The anticipation hit the roof with the recent trailer release, and fans can’t wait to see what Dr. Strange has done. The film finds its way to us this December, and the welcome will definitely be warm.
