Roundup of the week- Davido’s orphanage donation, Teen Wolf Movie, Kanye West’s IG outbursts and more

On this week’s entertainment roundup, I touch on Davido giving accountability on his viral 250 million Naira orphanage donation, the upcoming Teen Wolf movie, new music, and Kanye West’s IG rants.

Davido gives accountability on orphanage donation

On 17 November 2021, in what was supposed to be a harmless bant-like tweet, Nigerian Singer Davido made headlines as he racked up over 200 million Naira from his fans and friends. He had jokingly requested money from anyone who previously collaborated with him to get to a hit song.

The singer shared several screenshots of supposed fans and friends sending him money following the tweet. Within two days, he announced making 200 million Naira. Then, he followed up by revealing his plan to donate everything to orphanages across the country with an addition of 50 million Naira of his own money.

In February, this past week, three months later, Davido claimed to have disbursed the money as planned.

However, famous Twitter user Daniel Regha demanded an update on how the superstar shared the money.

Within hours, Davido responded with a statement alongside names of different orphanages around the country who received what percentage of the money.

The Singer closes the week by announcing his upcoming live show at the O2 arena in London, scheduled to hold on 5 March 2022.

Teen Wolf Movie revival

Something about television series produced in the 2010s had young people like myself in quite a chokehold. American Supernatural series like The Vampire DiariesThe OriginalsTeen Wolf, and a couple of others helped me navigate my early naive teenage years. They helped open my imagination to a world of fantasy, with their plot mostly centered around horror, adolescent relationship, and identity. A lot of young people were heavily invested in these television programs. Now, crossing over from the 2010s into the 2020s, and with several streaming platforms available, there continue to be several attempts at reviving some of these shows. Lately, we’ve seen the remake and reboot of the popular Gossip Girl from HBO Max, and now the ever-green 2011 television series Teen Wolf is getting a second chance; this time, as a movie, according to Deadline

Teen Wolf movie revival, Dylan O'Brien missing
Dylan O’Brien (who played Stiles Stilinski) will not be part of Teen Wolf movie remake.

Teen Wolf Movie will stream on Paramount+, and Tyler Posey (Scott McCall) is set to return and reprise his previous lead role. However, Dylan O’Brien, who played one of the most underrated characters (Stiles Stilinski), will not be in the movie. In addition, Arden Cho, who played Kira (the main character’s girlfriend from season 3 to 5), will also not be featured in the new movie alongside Tyler Hoechlin (he played Derek Hale and was kind of a mentor to Scott). Other cast members confirmed for the film are Holland Roden (Lydia), Linden Ashby (Sherif Stilinski a.k.a Stiles Father), Colton Haynes (Jackson), Ryan Kelley (Deputy Parrish), Shelley Hennig (Malia), Crystal Reed (Allison), Melissa Ponzio (Scott’s mother) and Dylan Sprayberry (Liam). As much as I look forward to this movie, I am also quite disappointed Stiles won’t be making an appearance because he was one of the original characters whose sense of humor made the show stand out from its overly dramatic suspense-filled aura.

We look forward to how this new movie plans to up the show’s teenage-like charm, given that it’s been five years since the show ended. All six seasons of Teen Wolf are available on Apple TV and Netflix for streaming.

New music from Asa, Simi, Zinoleesky, Blaqbonez, Asake, and Teezee, plus Buju’s name change

Fridays are known to be new music days, and this past Friday was no exception. Here is a breakdown of some of the new music that dropped…

Nigerian singer and songwriter Simi follows up her 2021 single “Woman” with a new song titled “Sare.” Produced by Type A, the singer yearns for love and everything that comes with it in this new jam. Listen to “Sare” by Simi here:

Asa returns with new music as promised! Earlier in February, the prolific singer and songwriter announced her upcoming live show in Lagos (scheduled for May). On Friday, “Ocean,” her new single, dropped on streaming platforms. Shifting away from her melancholic sound, the 39-year-old singer settles for a cheery beat as she personifies her lover to an ocean, as the song title says. The four-minute visual was also released alongside the song, directed by Meji Alabi. Listen to Asa new song and watch its video here:

Zinoleesky adds to his stack of hit singles with “Rocking,” teaming up with producer Niphkeys for this new banger. Groove to it here:

With the recent success of his sold-out concert in Lagos a few weeks ago, Emeka Akumefule, popularly known as Blaqbonez, ushers in a new single from his forthcoming album Young Preachertitled “Commander”. The song sees Blaqbonez threading deeper into an unconventional music style with its lyrics. Hear it for yourself:

Nigeria’s newest act, Asake, also dropped a new EP, on the back of his hit single “Omo Ope.” In the self-titled project, Magicsticks and Niphkeys serve as producers and it introduces us to a new street pop star in the making. Listen here:

Alternative music has continued to evolve, with some even morphing into mainstream sounds. Often called alte in Nigeria, some of its pioneers and forerunners are Odunise the Engine, Boj, Santi, Teezee, and Prettyboy D-O. Teezee has now dropped his first album, Arrested by Love, with its title heavily inspired by old Nollywood movies. The 9-track album features Davido, Midas The Jagaban, Teni, British rapper Pa Salieu, PrettyBoy D-O, DETO BLACK, and Lancey Foux. Experience Arrested by Love by Teezee below:

During the week, “Outside” crooner Buju announced a change of his stage name, and now prefers to be called Benson; written as BNXN. He joins fellow Nigerian artiste like 2face who changed to 2Baba, Kiss Daniel who changed to Kizz Daniel in 2018, and Santi, now known as Cruel Santino, in changing his stage name. Alongside the name change, he has revealed the arrival of new music coming soon.

A wild west week with Kanye

Has there been a time when American rapper Kanye West is never in the news? The answer to that question would be a no! And in the just-concluded week, the 44-year-old kept social media timelines buzzing.

The latest batch started on Valentine’s Day when the rapper/singer delivered a truck full of roses to Kim Kardashian despite them being separated [Kim filed for divorce back in February 2021].

In a now-deleted post on Instagram, Kanye captioned the picture of the truck filled with roses, “MY VISION IS KRYSTAL KLEAR.”

I can’t be the only one who thinks KRYSTAL KLEAR stands for Kim Kardashian — a clear hint that the singer is not over his ex and the mother to his four children. Previously, he had shared a photo of the reality TV star and their kids, ‘begging God‘ to bring back their family, which he has also deleted. After the Valentine’s Day post, Kanye’s new girlfriend Julia Fox confirmed their breakup the next day, after dating for only a few months. The breakup further gives credence to speculations that the relationship between the rapper and the 32-year-old actress was only a way to gain attention. Some even suggested it was a way to make Kim jealous. Following the breakup with Fox, Kanye continued to troll, diss and harass Pete Davidson, who is currently in a relationship with his former wife.

Over the past few weeks, Kanye West has made fun of Pete Davidson’s appearances in now-deleted Instagram posts and threatened to assault the 28-year-old comedian physically.

In the wake of all this recent happening, it seems the rapper planned it all to create awareness for his three-part documentary, titled Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, which premiered on Netflix. If the entire outburst was a ploy to remain on everybody’s lips in the week that was, then he succeeded. Yet, it could be a problem because while his constant obsession with Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson might look funny, it somehow boils down to online harassment and cyberbullying. Kanye West needs to realize he’s making social media feel quite unsafe while also invading other people’s privacy. As a grown man, he should know better.

He ended the week by scrubbing his IG page clean and leaving only promotional videos of his documentary and new album, Donda 2, which is set to be released on 22 February 2022 exclusively on his Stem Player.

Should we expect more Kanye drama in the coming week? We may have just seen the last of his tirades, for now.

There are chances we might have missed something from the past week; that is why we have you, remind us in the comment section.
