Recall that we broke the news that a driver ploughed a pickup truck down a crowded bike path along the Hudson River in Manhattan on Tuesday, killing eight people and injuring 11. He was subsequently shot by a police officer in what officials are calling the deadliest terrorist attack on New York City since Sept. 11, 2001, the New York Times reports.
More details concerning the incident have now emerged.
The driver was on the bike path for almost a mile. He eventually hit a small yellow school bus, injuring two kids and two adults. He jumped out of the truck carrying a paintball gun and pellet gun, and shouting “Allahu Akbar,” before being shot by police. He underwent surgery and is expected to survive.
Officials identified the attacker as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, an immigrant from Uzbekistan who came to the US about seven years ago. He’s also a green card holder which means that he has permanent residence in the US. He’s said to have left a note claiming that he carried out the attack in the name of ISISMeanwhile, the NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said this was an “act of terror.” New York State governor, Andrew M. Cuomo called it a “lone wolf” attack that doesn’t seem to be part of a larger plot. President Trump said this was “another attack by a very sick and deranged person,” and that “we must not allow ISIS to return, or enter our country.”
