Four of the most popular and most used social media engines are down. Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger all stopped responding at about 4:40 PM WAT. As reported by Dailymail, DownDetector claims the problem started around 16:44 BST and users across the globe are affected.
This is an occurrence that is very familiar and yet hardly ever feels familiar. At first, when your messages stop going through on WhatsApp, or your Instagram refuses to respond, your guess is, “it must be the network.” You even turn off your internet and restart it a few times before it occurs to you to check other apps or browsers for confirmation.
Usually, the first port of call is Twitter, and indeed, if anything is going on, you will immediately find out there. You check the trends and then it dawns on you, these platforms have crashed! It is something you never get used to. I personally was cursing under my teeth, thinking my internet provider was at it again. I feared the data I only just renewed yesterday had been sucked dry.

Not long after the initial report from DownDetector, the hashtag #Facebookdown, #Instagramisdown, and #WhatsApp began to trend on Twitter. Users everywhere just like me and you frantically reporting their challenges with connecting to the platforms. It is becoming quite disconcerting how these four platforms have these sudden crashes at what now appears to be regular intervals. Seeing as they are all owned by the same company, it can be inferred that this lapse is from the top.
What are Facebook and WhatsApp saying
Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have now all taken to Twitter to comment on the ongoing issue.
