Uber to be regulated in South Africa

Reports from South Africa indicate that a solution is in sight to resolve the turf war between Uber and metered taxi operators.

This comes after a long series of acts of violence between the two groups. Most of the attacks were recorded in the country’s capital Pretoria – 204 incidences, 86 attacks occurred in Johannesburg while four attacks were said to have taken place in  Ekurhuleni. Murder, attempted murder, arson, assault, theft, robbery, hijacking of vehicles and verbal intimidation were among the specific acts of violence that were reported to the police.

Following the ugly events, the provincial government representing the associations has announced that the activities of Uber drivers will be regulated, an announcement that has been favourably received by the metered taxi operators. Meanwhile, a special police task force has been brought to douse tension.
