Do you remember that time during the 2016 US presidential election campaign it was revealed that a then-presidential candidate Donald Trump had not paid any federal income tax for years?
He even admitted it during one of the presidential debates and according to him, he took advantage of the US tax loopholes to avoid paying those taxes. So legally, he didn’t commit any crime. Ethically? That’s not within our remit to discuss.
Anyway, that was exactly what this story reminded us - taking advantage of legal loopholes to serve one’s purposes.
The story is of two straight Irish men, Matt Murphy, 83, and Michael O’Sullivan, 58, who got married in Ireland so as to avoid paying inheritance tax that could cost up to €50,000. Yes, you read that right. Depending on how you wanna look at it, kudos for friendship or shame to tax cheaters? As for us, we know whose side we are on.

Matt and Micheal have been living together in Matt’s house in Dublin, Ireland. Michael is Matt’s carer. They were not in a romantic relationship just good friends who care for each other. They have been friends for almost 30 years.
