Reactions as first electric cars assembled in Nigeria are unveiled

The CableNG, in a tweet, broke the news about the first ever Nigerian electric cars, assembled in a plant in Lagos State.

At the event attended by Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state, we saw the three electric vehicles. They turned out to be the 2018 Hyundai Kona electric vehicles. The Hyundai Kona is a five-door subcompact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. The electric version called the Kona Electric (or Kona EV) was first launched in South Korea on the first half of 2018 and rolled out gradually worldwide afterwards.

Following the announcement of the Lagos factory where the EVs were assembled, Nigerian Twitter users mocked the development. Many of them mentioned the fact that the country’s electricity generation was still in shambles.

To allay fears, Sanwo-Olu said, according to Channels TV, stated that the state government will provide charging points for electric cars, and continue to partner with stakeholders who are ready to bring in innovative ideas that will make Lagos stand out and further create an enabling environment where business can thrive.
