COVID-19: Lagos pandemic taskforce seals Cubana nightclub

Following Governor Sanwo-Olu’s directives concerning activities during the new COVID-19 restrictions, the Lagos State taskforce has sealed Cubana nightclub on Sunday.

According to news sources, Lagos State Safety Commission and Lagos State Police Command collaborated to carry out this operation. There is also a viral video of the sealing of the popular nightclub online.

Part of the official statement released by Gboyega Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to the Lagos State Governor reads;

“Lagos State Commissioner of @PoliceNG CP Odumosu personally led a team that dispersed club attendees before shutting down Cubana, Ikeja GRA for failing to comply with #COVID19 guidelines.”

Also confirming the report, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Gawat Jubril, also said:

“The Lagos State Safety Commission just sealed CUBANA Ikeja and other facilities for non-compliance to the State Government COVID-19 protocols.”

On 18 December 2020, the Lagos State Government had issued a new set of directives to combat the rise of coronavirus in the state. Among these new guidelines are;

— Immediate shut down of all schools

— Cancellation of concerts, carnivals and street parties

— Immediate shut down of all night clubs in the State

— Midnight to 4 AM curfew

— All public places to enforce the ‘No Mask No Entry’ policy

In a statement that came hours before the Cubana nightclub was sealed, Sanwo-Olu had appealed to Lagosians;

“We cannot afford another total lockdown so I enjoin us to keep observing the prescribed protocols and the required lifestyle adjustments that will help us enter 2021 stronger, healthier and safer.

“Let’s do this for our families and friends. Let’s by our actions demonstrate that we truly love our neighbours. Let us demonstrate awareness about the existence of COVID-19 in our communities and live right to deliberately reduce and eliminate its spread.”
