Burna Boy pledges support for Sudan massacre victims

Award-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has pledged his support and help to any organisation available to provide relief assistance to the victims of the ongoing violence and massacre in Sudan.

The singer made this known in his reaction to the tragedy that has claimed several lives with many male and females raped.

In a social media post, the “Dangote” crooner wrote,

I STAND WITH SUDAN! … we can’t be silent when our brothers and sisters are being oppressed. Any organisations involved in providing medical aid in Sudan pls hit me up.”

Some background

Late last year, the people of Sudan had started protesting food shortages and rising prices. That quickly turned into anti-gov protests. Then, earlier this year, the military stepped in took over the reign of the country from President Omar al-Bashi, in what some had described as karma. That’s because Omar al-Bashir left office the same way he came into it: with a military coup.

The military arrested him and said it would take over for two years before holding elections. But pro-democracy protesters said, “we want a civilian gov, and we want it now.” Particularly because many in the military are al-Bashir loyalists. The two sides had been trying to work out a transitional process but talks broke down. What started as a civil protest turned nasty as security forces cracked down on protesters last week. More than 100 people were killed and hundreds more injured. Doctors believe more than 70 people were raped during an attack on a protest camp in the capital. Security forces allegedly committed the rapes. The internet has also been shut off in the country.

And Now?

Burna Boy’s offer of help is coming on the heels of social media users slamming the mainstream media for its silence in regards to the Sudan massacre. Many are aggrieved that the Western media has not yet reported the massacre that has left many killed, injured, arrested, raped and others missing. And it looks like Burna Boy cared so much for what was going to come out of his self-imposed departure from social media. The Dangote crooner has told fans he was retiring from social media and that his accounts, which will be maintained by his management would be used solely for the promotion of his music.
