Nigeria begins COVID-19 vaccination

Nigeria on Friday, 5 March 2021 commenced its COVID-19 vaccination.

According to PM News, a medical doctor, Dr. Cyprian Igong, of the National Hospital, Abuja, received a jab of the AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccine today, 5 March 2021.

Meanwhile, on Monday, 1 March, the Nigerian government began an online registration of Nigerians interested in taking the COVID-19 vaccine. The first batch of the vaccine was expected to land in the country on Tuesday, 2 March.

The online registration is being done by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). The electronic platform would enable Nigerians to get vaccinated against coronavirus pandemic as part of efforts to end the pandemic and return to normality.

The Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, said that the adopted T.E.A.C.H strategy that birthed the online registration combined of indigenous (traditional) approaches with modern technologically enabled systems of vaccination.

On Thursday, 4 March 2021, the NCDC during its nightly update on coronavirus in Nigeria via its Twitter handle, revealed that the total number of coronavirus infections in the country now stands at 157,671 confirmed. The center also stated that 136,335 COVID-19 patients have recovered and have been discharged while a total of 1,951 people have died from COVID-19 related complications.
