Early life
Tory Lanez was born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson on 27 July 1992 to a Bajan father, Sonstar, and a mother from Curacao, Luella, in Brampton, Canada. The family was originally based in Montreal before moving to Miami, Canada. Lanez discovered rapping at a young age, and he started to cultivate his talent only to find out that his mother had died from a rare disease.
After his mother’s death, his father became a minister and missionary, and they travelled around the country for a bit before remarrying and settling the family in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 2006, he was sent to live with his cousin in New York because of his behavioural issues. He was then forced to move to Toronto, where he lived with his grandmother, who refused to take care of him. Because of this, he was left all alone, and he said about the experience:
“I ended up moving downtown with these three dudes that I didn’t really know. I came into the house, and I didn’t realize how things worked. From like fifteen to eighteen, I was just fighting them. It was every man for himself. That’s what made me a man, having to fend for myself and being in a situation where there is no dad, no grandma and no mom to help you. It changed the person that I am today.”
When he was in tenth grade, Lanez dropped out of high school to pursue a career in music. At 17, he started to sing, but he never got voice training. Lanez also went by the name Argentina Fargo, which means Foreign money.
He said: “When I put foreign and banking together, it’s like foreign money. I’m a Canadian dude, walking around America. When you look at me, it’s like looking at foreign money. So I call myself Argentina Fargo—like foreign money.”
Tory Lanez height has never been a problem for him. He cites Brandy and Ray J as his music inspirations growing up.

He released several songs and went on several tours before it was revealed in 2015 that he had signed a record deal with Benny Blanco’s Mad Love Records and Interscope Records. He released several singles under the label before departing in 2020 and releasing his fifth studio album, “Daystar”. In many songs on the album, he defended himself against multiple claims from Megan Thee Stallion that he shot her in the foot.
