Early life

Tory Lanez was born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson on 27 July 1992 to a Bajan father, Sonstar, and a mother from Curacao, Luella, in Brampton, Canada. The family was originally based in Montreal before moving to Miami, Canada. Lanez discovered rapping at a young age, and he started to cultivate his talent only to find out that his mother had died from a rare disease.

After his mother’s death, his father became a minister and missionary, and they travelled around the country for a bit before remarrying and settling the family in Atlanta, Georgia.

Megan Thee Stallion controversy

On Sunday, 12 July 2020, the police were called to a Hollywood Hills home for a disturbance. The scene they found was disturbing; there was blood in the car coming from a wound in Megan Thee Stallion’s foot. Witnesses said that people were arguing in an SUV before someone fired shots in the air and the car drove off.

When officers eventually located the vehicle, they found Tory Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion in the car. During a search of the vehicle, police found a gun and arrested Lanez for a felony.

The case appeared to be under wraps for a while before Megan came forward on 20 August to name Tory Lanez as the person who shot her. In an Instagram Live video, she explained her side of events while saying that his publicist was trying to cover things up.

“Yes, this n**** Tory shot me,” she said. This revelation contradicted early reports that she had cut her foot on glass. Megan said that she initially said so because she was scared of the police.

“I didn’t get cut by no glass, but let me tell you why they’re saying that. When the police came because the neighbors called the police … the police come — I’m scared. 

“All this shit going on with the police … I didn’t want to die. I didn’t want the police to shoot me cause there’s a n**** with a gun in the car with me,” she said.

On 8 October, felony assault and gun charges were announced against Tory Lanez. There is also a protection order against him.

Megan also wrote an opinion piece for The New York Times in which she states: “Black women are still constantly disrespected and disregarded in so many areas of life. I was recently the victim of an act of violence by a man. After a party, I was shot twice as I walked away from him. We were not in a relationship. Truthfully, I was shocked that I ended up in that place.”

The investigation is still ongoing and Lanez faces a maximum of 22 years in prison.
