Future of Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat franchise revealed!

Warner Bros. is rumoured to have plans for four more Mortal Kombat films if the 2021 release succeeds. This revelation comes after a Variety interview with Joe Taslim, who plays supervillain Sub-Zero in the first film.

Five Mortal Kombat films?! Fans will be beside themselves with excitement if this happens. The film franchise has always been plagued with continuation issues since the 1997 sequel failed to improve on the good start of the 1995 original release.

According to Taslim, his contract as Sub-Zero covers a total of five films, with the first one already completed and showing in cinemas worldwide already. This hint at four additional Mortal Kombat films to follow, but with a caveat: “If this one’s successful, maybe we do more,” the Indonesian actor and real-life martial artist said. Although he tried not to give fans too much hope by saying he is not sure about a sequel.

But what counts as success in the film industry? No doubt, 2021 Mortal Kombat has to break even, beat its $95 million filming budget plus other marketing expenses, and post an impressive profit as well.

The film is already showing promise of doing just this right from the get-go. IGN reported in February 2021 that its trailer became the most viewed red band trailer in a period of four days, beating the record held by Deadpool 2. Although, The Suicide Squad now holds the record after its release one month later. Deadpool 2 had snagged the record from Logan, and the two films enjoyed successful theatrical runs grossing $324 million and $226 million, respectively.

The Mortal Kombat reboot stars others such as Lewis Singwah Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada. Its release was initially delayed because of COVID-19 restrictions, and it will hit US cinemas and HBO Max simultaneously on 23 April 2021.

Warner Bros. to release four future Mortal Kombat films

Already, in its opening international weekend, Mortal Kombat made $10.7 million from 17 countries, with the largest market being Russia ($6.1 million). In its second weekend, the film made $5.7 million from 28 countries.

On Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator website, the film holds an approval rating of 65% based on 20 reviews, with an average rating of 5.8/10. Director Simon McQuoid has been praised for sticking to the film’s video game origins dating back to creators Ed Boon and John Tobias original ideas.

“I just watched the #MortalKombatMovie and I’ll say this… It’s best video game movie ever made. Why?

Because it makes you want to play the Mortal Kombat games. Imagine that; a video game movie achieving its goal so well that you want to go play the games it’s adapted from,” a Twitter user says about the film.

Another viewer said: “After being lucky enough to have seen #MortalKombatMovie thanks to @warnerbrosau, I can confirm it’s pretty much everything a #MortalKombat fan could wish for. Action is intense, fights are glorious to behold, & it is legit funny at times. @MKMovie wins with a flawless victory!”

It seems the future of the Mortal Kombat franchise is assured with its early performances. Production partners New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster Productions, and Broken Road Productions as well as distributors Warner Bros. will have to make official announcements before we can count this as sealed.
