Ambrosia Band: What Happened To Them? And 10 Amazing Facts You Didn’t Know

Ambrosia is an American quartet rock band that was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1970. They were active from 1970-1982 after that they became active again in 1989 till present. The Ambrosia band later had roughly six or more members. They currently tour internationally and have worked with many notable artists in the past and present.

After forming in 1970, the grip was discovered in 1971 by Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Zubin Mehta who featured the rock band as part of the so-called All-American Dream Concert. It, however, took them four more years to get a fantastic record deal.

History of The Band

The rock band was founded as a quartet band with David Pack, who is a guitarist and vocalist born July 15, 1952, Joe Puerta, born July 2, 1951, who is a bassist and also a vocalist like David, Christopher North, who is a keyboardist and Burleigh Drummond who is the drummer.

According to an interview granted by David Pack, he said he met Joe when he was 15, and they were in a band called The Sentry. Then about three years later, when they were 18, the two of them formed a “supergroup” of musicians from the South Bay of Los Angeles.

They were initially called Ambergris Mite but realized that another band had come out with an album called Ambergris, so they had to go back and look for another band name. David Pack said that the band had to open the dictionary and pick the word after ambergris which was “Ambrosia,” and the meaning related to the band; Ambrosia meant the nectar of the Gods.

In 1969 the band’s music perspective changed after the group attended a show at the Whiskey a GO GO nightclub in West Hollywood, California, the United States, in December. There they saw an unknown band called King Crimson, a progressive rock band that incorporated jazz, folk, and electronic elements into their music.

In 1971, the Ambrosia band was invited to the Hollywood Bowl, an amphitheater in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, to play there on stage to test the new sound system that had been installed there by a friend of theirs.

Gordon Parry, the head engineer in charge at the Hollywood Bowl, was so fascinated with how the group performed that he invited them back to attend performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonics, a pretty large orchestra. He also introduced them to Zubin Mehta, an Indian conductor of Western classical music, and featured the Ambrosia band as part of a so-called All-American concert.

In 1978 Christopher North left the group right before their most significant pop breakthrough with the number three hit “How Much I Feel” they followed the success of that with another number three hit, “Biggest Part of Me,” and the follow-up “You’re the Only Woman” in 1980.

Their next album failed, ending their run-of-the-chart success and the group broke up while each individual was still active as a session musician, vocalist, and producer. The group auditioned for A&M Records, owned by Jerry Moss and Alpert Herb and was founded in 1962, earlier on in their history but were signed by 20th Century Fox Records in 1975, who helped to release two albums for the group.

The Career of Ambrosia Band

Ambrosia band started in 1970, with about 5 top 40 hot singles released between 1975 and 1980. Most of the original member band members have been active with the group for 30 years to the present day, except the lead vocalist David Pack who left entirely in the year 2000.

Ambrosia band started with a lightweight AOR sound; they used to be test bands for a PA system company. The band would go to different venues, try to audition the venue’s sound system, and play their music. They were auditioning the system at the Hollywood Bowl. Gordon Perry, one of the engineers, was fascinated with the music they were performing and told them they should learn more about classical music.

He also invited them to come and play every night at the Hollywood Bowl, and that was when they met the classical conductor, Zubin Mehta, the conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. They ended up playing at the All American Dream concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

Ambrosia’s music sound steadily improved over time as they toughened up their music. They enjoyed the early US hits with “Holdin’ On To Yesterday” and a cover version of The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour. They also appeared in a documentary movie, All This And World War II.

They disbanded in 1984, and all their leading Ambrosia went on to have really busy session careers. David Pack released a solo album called Anywhere You Go in 1985. Still, the album featured Burleigh Drummond, Joe Puerta, Kerry Livgren, Michael Porcaro, Michael McDonald, and a bass player Stanley Clarke.

After six years, the four members of the group decided to give the band another shot, and Joe Puerta said, “Enough time had passed where our differences had cooled, the horror of our contractual arrangement had faded into the past, and we were all free agents.” So they re-formed the Ambrosia band and continued touring into the new millennium

In 1995, the group expanded their annual touring schedule, David Pack had a conflict, and John DeFaria, a guitarist, filled in for him. Bernie Chiaravalle, a singer-songwriter, also stepped in in the summer of ’97. And Mike Keneally also stepped up and did the honors in ’98 and 2000.

In 1997 Warner Bros released Ambrosia’s greatest hits, CD Anthology, which contained songs from all five of their albums and three additional new tracks; the entire Ambrosia catalog was remastered and released on CD.

The Ambrosia Band is worth about $17 million, getting money from albums and their deal with Warner Bros, while the lead vocalist and guitarist David pack is worth $20 million.
