Spanish club, Villarreal, have sacked coach Javi Calleja after a disastrous start to the season that has left the club hovering above bottom three in La Liga.

The former Villarreal midfielder who took over as coach in September 2017, was only able to guard the club to winning just once in La Liga since September 2018. Although, he helped the club progress through to the knockout stages in Europe, it wasn’t enough to save his job.

Announcing his dismissal today, the struggling club said in a statement: “Villarreal has decided to rescind Javi Calleja’s contract as first team coach. The club would like to thank the coach for his work, dedication and professionalism since taking over last season.”
