The Tour de France had to be temporarily stopped following a protest that led to the use of pepper spray.

Fox news reports that protestors stormed the road at stage 16 and threw bales of hay across the road in an attempt to disrupt the event and have their voices heard.

The police responded with the use of pepper spray that eventually drifted into the faces of cyclists and not just their intended targets.

The general director of the Tour, Christian Prudhomme then had no choice but to briefly pause the stage.

As police removed the bales blocking the road, the riders affected received medical treatment, the race then restarted around 15 minutes later.
