The awards recognise excellence in live Broadway theatre - theatrical performances presented in the 41 professional theatres in each with 500 or more seats located in the Theater District and Lincoln Center along Broadway, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.
Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban on Sunday co-hosted the 2018 event. The duo kicked things off with a piano duet in which they poked fun at the fact that neither of them has won any Tony or Grammy Awards. “Neither one of us has ever won anything. So this is for the people who lose,” the hosts sang.
The Band’s Visit won 10 of the 11 categories in which it was nominated, while Mean Girls got shut out despite 12 nods. Productions that opened during the 2017-2018 Broadway season on or before April 26 were eligible for nominations.
