The album, which is a collection of sombre songs fit for the current COVID-19 climate, beat out Juice WRLD’s Legends Never Die as the biggest debut of the year.
Folklore was most notably driven by 615,000 in traditional album sales, and 218,000 in SEA units, which equated to 289.85 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks. This marks her seventh number 1 album.
The album was recorded primarily with the National’s Aaron Dessner and released on 24 July with little promotion. It also features songs with Bon Iver and collaborator Jack Antonoff. Swift’s previous album, 2019’s Lover released only 11 months ago, debuted at number 1 with 867,000 units.
In the last four years, this incredibly talented singer has taken up the three biggest weeks for any album. As far back as July 2016, the three largest sales for any album are Swift’s Reputation which sold 1.24 million units, Lover, which sold 867,000 units and now Folklore, which has sold 846,000 units.
