Barcelona’s hopes of securing the La Liga title this season was dealt a huge blow by a late twist in Celta as Lago Aspas scored an 88th-minute free-kick, condemning them to a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes.
They go top of the league with one point but Real Madrid can re-establish a two-point lead if they beat Espanyol on Sunday.
Luis Suarez gave Barca the perfect start, heading home Lionel Messi’s clever free-kick in the 20th minute for his first goal since January. Celta fought back though as Fyodor Smolov scored four minutes after the restart.
Quique Setien’s men restored their lead in the 67th minute through Luiz Suarez, who was once again set up by Lionel Messi, put his side on course for their first win at Celta Vigo since 2015 and a three-point gap above Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
The hosts should have won the game deep into injury time but Nolito’s close-range shot was straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Luis Suarez admitted that the draw with Celta Vigo left a bitter taste as there was a potentially crucial twist in the La Liga title race.
Lionel Messi who provided both goals has yet to score now in 3 games and one goal shy of 700 career goals for club and country. He, however, leads the league this season on goals and assists with 21 and 17 respectively.
