Omoni Oboli: Actress recounts what it felt like convincing people to watch Nollywood films

Her films are among the most grossing box-office hits in the country with “Okafor’s Law” earning 90 million naira and “Wives on Strike”  71 million naira.

 

While on a promotion of her next project “My Wife and I“, which is set to debut on cinema on 25 August 2017. the actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli shared experiences of what it is like to be a filmmaker in Nigeria, according to Pulse Nigeria.

 

The filmmaker said that she has met different types of Nigerians, including the ‘I don’t watch Nollywood movie’ gang.

“There are just so many of them, some people really don’t know how to talk or they just feel like they don’t care.
Sometimes, people say stuffs like ‘I don’t watch Nollywood films. Why should I pay to see your film? How can I come to the cinema to watch home video?”

 

Oboli would try to explain the difference between a home video and films made for the cinema.
“I’m like ‘it’s not home video, there’s a difference.’ There are made for cinema Nigerian movies and there are home video movies. So, if you’re watching it in the cinema, it’s a made in cinema Nigerian film.”

Some days, the actress succeeds at convincing them to see her film, but on some other days, she doesn’t succeed.
“It’s quite difficult convincing some people. Some people have their minds made up, there’s nothing you’re going to say to them. They won’t watch your movie. Some of those people, after not watching your film, will want to take a picture with you.”

“I’m like ‘just buy a ticket, go to LA. Once you get out of the airport, Brad Pitt will be waiting for you, go and take pictures with him. “You came to see his film, you didn’t see my film. Why do you want to take a picture with me?”

 

These bad experiences have only made the actress better at her job.
“I don’t shy away from negative experiences because they always make me better at what I do. I have met some people who have been really really nasty. “It helps me with trying to talk to the next person, because I now know what to say and what not to say.”
