I heard somewhere this week that when you say “Without any further ado”, you have in fact just further ‘adoed’ a little. In that spirit, let’s jump right into business. Some great films and TV shows like Midnight Mass, The Starling, and more are out this weekend, and I’d like you to partake in them. See more below.
1. My Little Pony: A New Generation
It’s been a minute since any major animation debuted, but the wait is over. Premiering this weekend is My Little Pony: A New Generation, a 2021 computer-animated fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Cullen and José Ucha. Per the premise, friendship has been replaced by fear in Equestria. Sunny, Earth pony, and Izzy, a unicorn, embark on an adventure that takes them to faraway lands and challenges them to make new friends as they strive to restore harmony to Equestria. The film comes out on Netflix today 24 September. The perfect content for a weekend family moment.
2. Birds of Paradise
This one is a film adaptation of the 2019 novel Bright Burning Stars by A.K. Small. Birds of Paradise was written for screen and directed by Sarah Adina Smith. The lead character Kate Sanders is an ambitious and gifted (tomboyish) aspiring ballerina from Virginia who, because of her low-income status, is given a scholarship to attend a prestigious ballet school in Paris, France. Upon arriving at the cutthroat, internationally-renowned institution, her confidence and emotional fortitude are tested by a beautiful, mysterious fellow dancer, Marine Durand, who recently lost her brother (and dance partner) to suicide. The film will be available on Prime Video today.

Based on the best-selling novel by David Guterson. East of The Mountains is a drama adventure film that has received high praise from critics upon its premiere at film festivals earlier in the year. Renowned critic, Soren Anderson said of it: “It’s a small-scale intimate movie solidly anchored by Skerritt’s disciplined, deeply felt work. It’s one of the best performances of his career.”
The film follows Ben Givens, a retired heart surgeon and recent widower who learns he has terminal cancer. Determined to navigate his final days on his own terms, he shares the news with no one—not even his daughter—instead, he travels back to his boyhood home in Eastern Washington with only his dog in tow. But the journey does not go as planned; the familiar landscape triggers memories and a connection with a kind stranger inspires new insight. East of The Mountains climbs into cinemas today.
