Meghan Markle’s children book “The Bench” has now become a #1 New York Times Bestseller.
The project, which according to the author started only as a poem for her husband Prince Harry, has now surpassed all expectations. As seen on the couples’ official website Archewell, “[the project] expanded into a children’s book with imagery that captures moments of love and shared experiences between a diverse group of fathers and sons.”
The words are brought to life by ‘watercolor illustrations by Christian Robinson that bring the gentleness and joy to life,’ the website continued.
Announcing the news on the website with a post, Markle wrote:

“While this poem began as a love letter to my husband and son, I’m encouraged to see that its universal themes of love, representation and inclusivity are resonating with communities everywhere. In many ways, pursuing a more compassionate and equitable world begins with these core values.
“Equally, to depict another side of masculinity — one grounded in connection, emotion, and softness — is to model a world that so many would like to see for their sons and daughters alike. Thank you for supporting me in this special project.”

The overall message of the book is that life can get happy and sad too, and fathers can be present through all of it.
It is interesting to note that the book, which was released barely a week after the birth of their daughter, Lilibet Diana, was not publicised or promoted because Markle was recovering from childbirth. Now, it is a bestseller. Not bad at all for a debut publication.
