They were the most successful of all African countries that participated in the just concluded IAAF World Athletics Championships in London. With five gold medals, Kenya five gold, two silver and four bronze medals Kenya finished second overall on the medal table behind the USA, and ahead of the likes of GB, Russia and China.

So it’s perfectly natural that the East African country would want to host the event and Keny has expressed interest in hosting the World Athletics Championships come 2023. The country is counting on the success of the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the 2017 IAAF World Under-18 Championships, which it hosted. The Kenyan sports minister, Hassan Wario, is positive that the country can pull it off.

He is quoted by Daily Mail as saying:

“We have shown that we are capable to host smaller events, and it has now reached a time when we should host big competitions.Kenya became the first African nation to win the world championships in Beijing in 2015. It is only fitting that we should be the first country to bring the championships to Africa.”

If Kenya succeeds in its bid, it’ll be the first African country to host this event, which is widely regarded as the World Cup for athletics.
