Joker, Marriage Story, Cynthia Erivo make nominations for 2020 Oscars| See full list

Joker, the much talked about film about the origins of Batman’s biggest enemy, is the biggest winner for this year’s Oscars.

The film earned eleven nods, including best director for Todd Phillips, best picture, and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

The Irishman, 1917, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood followed close behind with ten nominations.

Meanwhile, Cynthia Erivo, the star of Harriet, has scored her first Oscar nomination for the film.

Female directors were completely ignored at this year’s Oscars as Martin Scorsese, Todd Phillips, Sam Mendes, Quentin Tarantino, and Bong Joon Ho were nominated in the category.

Recall that for the first time that the Nigerian Oscar Selection Committee submitted a film – Genevieve’s Nnaji’s lionheart – for consideration under the Oscars International category. However, Lionheart was disqualified because the dialogue was largely in English. Otherwise, it would have been interesting to find out if it would have been nominated.

The awards show is set to air on 9 February 2020.
