Idris Elba is about to trade-in his murder detective get-up on Luther to star in the currently untitled remake of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix.
According to Hollywood Reporter, the British actor, musician and DJ will direct and produce the film described as a modern retelling of the 19th-century gothic romance novel.
Published in 1831, the story follows Quasimodo, a hunchback who falls wholeheartedly in love with a gipsy, Esmeralda. It was famously turned into a Disney animated film in 1996.
Elba will play Quasimodo. His production company, Green Door will be behind the effort – and he also plans to produce music for the movie, which Netflix describes as a sonic and musical experience.

The script will be written by Michael Mitnick (The Current War) and co-produced by Fred Berger (La La Land), Ana Garanito (Green Door) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Midnight Special).
In a post on their official Twitter account, Netflix says: “The film is currently untitled but I’m strongly suggesting ‘Hunchback of Notre DAAAAAMN’.”
