Popular Egyptian actress Rania Youssef has been sued for wearing an indecent dress to a film festival in Egypt.

Rania attended the closing event for the 40th Cairo International Film festival on November 29 in a glamorous black, lacy, transparent dress. The outfit which exposed her legs made many Egyptians furious.

According to The Telegraph, lawyers have filed a lawsuit against the 44-year-old actress accusing her of “inciting debauchery, temptation and spreading vice in ways that violate established norms in Egyptian society.” If convicted, she could face up to 5 years in jail.

The Egyptian Actors’ Syndicate also made a comment to AFP, stating: “The appearance of some of the festival’s guests did not agree with the traditions and values of the society, and this has undermined the festival and the union which is responsible for its member’s behaviour.”

The day after the festival, Rania apologized on social media for the dress she wore. She wrote: “I probably miscalculated when I chose to wear this dress. It was the first time that I wore it and I did not realize it would spark so much anger.”

The actress added: “I reaffirm my commitment to the values upon which we were raised in Egyptian society.”
