According to the website, Live Science, the name Earth derived from the Old English and Germanic words eor(th)e and ertha respectively which means ground.

For people back then, the earth was not seen as a planet. Planets were considered as distant stars in the sky akin to how a god would likely look to a human. The earth was considered more of a setting with elements – water, air, fire and earth.

Later on, thinkers and scientists confirmed that we were standing on a planet too but by the time this was confirmed we had already kept the Roman names for the planets and we had called our planet Earth for centuries.
