For people back then, the earth was not seen as a planet. Planets were considered as distant stars in the sky akin to how a god would likely look to a human. The earth was considered more of a setting with elements – water, air, fire and earth.
Later on, thinkers and scientists confirmed that we were standing on a planet too but by the time this was confirmed we had already kept the Roman names for the planets and we had called our planet Earth for centuries.
