Prosecutors in Chicago on Tuesday dropped charges against Empire star Jussie Smollett, who was accused of staging a homophobic and racist attack against himself.

CNBC reports that Smollett’s attorneys, Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes, in a statement state: “Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him.

“Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29th,” the statement continues.

Smollett was indicted on 16 felony counts related to making a false report that he was attacked by two men.

After the charges were dropped, the actor spoke to the media, saying he would not be his mother’s son if he had indeed done what he was accused of doing.

“I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one,” he says, adding: I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I was accused of.”

Cook County State Attorney’s Office, in a statement, after the charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped, said that the action was a just resolution and an appropriate resolution to the case.

The statement, according to CBS News, reads:

“After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case.”

Speaking on the case, Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, said the resolution was “a whitewash of justice” and that it shows you can beat the system if you are rich and influential.

Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson, also speaking on the dropped charges, opined that if Smollett was truly innocent, then he would take his day in court.
