The Nigerian music industry is filled with great talents making waves for themselves, such as Burna Boy who has successfully created a niche for himself. The singer has now revealed how it all started in a new documentary video.

The new documentary tells the story of Damini Ogulu, who is professionally known as Burna Boy, his background, family upbringing, and his journey so far in the music world.

In the video, the Afro-fusion singer and songwriter told the story of how he came by his now globally recognised stage name Burna Boy.

He explains: “I used to draw comics and stuff… I ended up wanting to be a superhero as well, but I had no name, so I just chose Burna… I used to use beats from video games and stuff.”

Speaking on his background, Burna Boy mentioned that he grew up in Portharcourt most of his life. And according to him, “it is a different world. There are a lot of similarities between us and any other developing country.

He continues: “There is heaven and hell in the same place. There is heaven for the people that have money and connections and there is hell, or even worse than hell for people who don’t.

“We are very strong people who are very good at adapting to situations and making the best of the worst situations. That is the spirit we have.”

His mom, Mrs Bose Ogulu who also doubles as his manager, also gave an interview in the documentary. According to Burna Boy’s mom, the singer “is just a normal person with a bunch of talents.” She also revealed that “he went to school in London but didn’t finish because he was focusing more on music.”

The interview also had his grandfather and former manager to Fela, Benson Idonue, who rightly mentioned that singers are influenced by Fela, wheater they are playing highlife or pop.
