Anonymous book collector buys 1st edition Things Fall Apart for N1m

An anonymous book collector has reportedly bought a first edition print of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart for one million naira.

This was announced by Nigerian poet and author, Lola Shoneyin.

The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives writer had on Sunday, 10th February, put the book, owned by her friend, up for sale.

Within a few hours of the Twitter announcement, an anonymous buyer reportedly purchased it.

Things Fall Apart was published in 1958 by William Heinemann. It was the first published novel by the late renowned writer Chinua Achebe and tells the story of Okonkwo who was conflicted by the eroding of culture with the advent of white men in colonial Nigeria. Though published over 60 years ago, the book continues to be popular, for instance, former US President Obama listed it as one of his favourite books of 2018. Things Fall Apart has been translated into more than 50 languages.
