Serie A Roundup: AC Milan stay top and unbeaten; Juventus denied victory; Napoli thrash AS Roma

AC Milan’s dominant start to the new Serie A season continued as they defeated Fiorentina at the San Siro on Sunday.

The victory means Milan stays top of the log with seven wins, two draws, and no losses so far this term.

Despite top scorer, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, missing through injury, Stefano Pioli’s side wasted no time in establishing a two-goal advantage with just 27 minutes on the clock, with goals from Alessio Romagnoli and then Franck Kessie from the spot effectively putting the game beyond struggling Fiorentina before the half-hour mark.

Benevento 1-1 Juventus: Andre Pirlo’s team seems to be struggling

Serie A Roundup

Things started quite well for Juventus, who went ahead through Alvaro Morata’s 21st-minute strike, but it all took a turn for the worse shortly thereafter, and for the worst very late on.

Andre Pirlo’s team started the game brightly with Alvaro Morata firing them ahead in the 21st minute, but it all came crushing when Benevento pulled an equalizer in first-half stoppage time when Gaetano Letizia’s effort made its way to the back of the net after the Juve defence failed to deal with it.

The draw sees the Old Lady fall six points short off leaders AC Milan, and to make matters even worse, the reigning champions will be without their second-highest goal contributor Alvaro Morata for at least one game with the Spaniard receiving a straight red card for dissent after the final whistle had gone.

Napoli 4-0 Roma: Diego Maradona honored with an emphatic win

Serie A Roundup

As was the case in their Europa League fixture last week, former Napoli star, Diego Maradona, was the focal point during proceedings as Napoli went into their game against Roma on Sunday.

Genaro Gattuso’s team delivered a solid performance – at the second time of asking – as they once again honored one of their own. The team from Southern Italy outperformed their Roman counterparts wearing a custom made strip inspired by the Argentine flag, in honor of adopted Neopolitan Maradona.

Lorenzo Insigne (31 minutes) opened the scoring in the first half, followed by a second from Fabian Ruiz (64 minutes) in the second half, before Dries Mertens (81 minutes) and Matteo Politano (86 minutes) completed the rout.
