Top seed Novak Djokovic was condemned to his fourth defeat of the year by fourth seed Daniil Medvedev who secured his passage to the semi-final at the ATP Finals.
Djokovic hit 24 unforced errors and five double faults in a 6-3 6-3 loss to Daniil Medvedev at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday.
The 33-year-old’s hopes of qualifying for the semis remain alive with a must-win final round-robin match against Alexander Zverev – who earlier defeated Diego Schwartzman to boost his own hopes – still to come on Friday.
German fifth seed Zverev upturned a second set loss to win 6-3 4-6 6-3 to end Schwartzman’s campaign after Medvedev’s win served as an implication for the Argentinian.
With the winners of both Group Tokyo 1970 and Group London 2020 already decided after Dominic Thiem’s victory over Rafael Nadal on Tuesday, there are two places left in the semi-final to be contested.
First, 20-time Grand Slam champion Nadal facing defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas on Thursday before Djokovic returns to the court to face Zverev on Friday.
Thursday’s other match will see US Open champion Dominic Them take on already eliminated Andrey Rublev.
Thursday will also see the duo of Joe Salisbury – Britain’s only representative at the tournament – and American Rajeev Ram takes on the German duo of Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies for a place in the Doubles semi-finals.
