Weekend Watchlist: see Passing, Army of Thieves, Love Life (Season 2), and other new films and TV series to watch this weekend.

It’s been a strenuous week on my end. All I can think of is spending my weekend with as little physical exertion as possible. I’m thinking films and TV series. You know, just sitting down, feeding my eyes and senses with good entertainment. If you found yourself mentally nodding fervently to all I’ve been saying, then keep reading. Here are ten films and TV series debuting this weekend.

1. Passing

Based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Nella Larsen, Passing is a 2021 black-and-white drama film written, produced, and directed by Rebecca Hall in her feature directorial debut. Set in 1920s New York City, it tells the story of a Black woman who finds her world upended when her life becomes intertwined with a former childhood friend who’s passing as white. Passing stars Alexander Skarsgard, Tessa Thompson, Andre Holland, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Bill Camp, Forest Whitaker, Oren Moverman, and Ruth Negga. It begins its cinema passage today in the UK.

2. Antlers

Supernatural horrors provide this fine blend of eeriness and awe, and that is what one should expect from this one. Antlers is a 2021 supernatural horror film directed by Scott Cooper. A small-town Oregon teacher and her brother, the local sheriff, become entwined with a young student harboring a dangerous secret with frightening consequences. Get into the cinemas anytime from today 29 October and go be frightened. Antlers stars Keri Russell, Scott Cooper, Guillermo del Toro, Jesse Plemons, and Scott Haze among others.

3. Army of Thieves

Well, that was fast! Barely six months after the Zack Snyder helmed Army of The Dead release, here comes its prequel. Army of Thieves is an upcoming heist romantic comedy film directed by Matthias Schweighöfer. In this prequel, small-town bank teller Dieter is recruited into a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals to break a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe. It debuts on Netflix today.

4. Love Life (Season 2)

Love Life is an American romantic comedy anthology streaming television series created by Sam Boyd. The series premiered on the HBO Max streaming service for its first season in May 2020. It follows Darby Carter, who searches for love throughout her 20s and 30s, often in all the wrong places, while the people she meets along the way leave a lasting impression. Love Life returns for a second season this weekend and it is binge-worthy content if you have HBO Max.

5. A Mouthful of Air

A Mouthful of Air is a 2021 American drama film, directed, written, and produced by Amy Koppelman. Julie Davis, warm, kind, loving to her husband and child, is a bestselling children’s author. While her books deal with unlocking childhood fears, she has yet to unlock the dark secret that has haunted her own life. But when her second child is born, events occur that bring that secret to the fore, and with it, a crushing, powerful battle to survive. This one features Amy Irving, Britt Robertson, Amanda Seyfried, Finn Wittrock, and Paul Giamatti. It is available in US cinemas today.

6. Last Night in Soho

Here come another one of the most anticipated 2021 films. Last Night in Soho is a British psychological horror film directed by Edgar Wright. It is about a young girl, passionate about fashion design, who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it appears, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences. The film premieres in UK theatres today.

7. Colin in Black & White

There are tons of inspiring and thought provoking stories to tell, and Ava DuVernay seems to know just how to pick them. Memories of the masterpiece When They See Us, which told the heart-wrenching story of the Central Park Five are still fresh, and Ava is here with another miniseries that is sure to be a straight hit. Colin in Black & White is an American limited drama series that dramatizes the teenage years of athlete and activist Colin Kaepernick. It is an exploration of his high school years and experiences that led him to become an activist. The series debuts on Netflix today, and it definitely will be worth your while.

8. Violet

Violet is a 2021 American drama film written, directed, and produced by Justine Bateman in her directorial debut. After realizing she’s spent years allowing fear to drive every decision she makes, Violet must learn to silence her relentlessly negative inner thoughts in order to regain control over her life. Violet makes its US debut today, and it stars Oliva Munn, Justine Bateman, Justin Theroux, Luke Bracey, and Keith Powers.

9. The Souvenir Part II

The Souvenir Part II is a 2021 drama film, written and directed by Joanna Hogg. It is a sequel to The Souvenir (2019). In the aftermath of her tumultuous relationship with a charismatic and manipulative older man, Julie begins to untangle her fraught love for him in making her graduation film, sorting fact from his elaborately constructed fiction. Starring Honor Swinton Byrne, Joe Alwyn, Tilda Swinton, Jaygann Ayeh, Richard Ayoade, James Spencer Ashworth, the customary A24 hit hits US cinemas today.

10. Cicada

Cicada is an American drama film directed by Matthew Fifer and Kieran Mulcare. It follows Ben, a young bisexual man, as he comes out to the world and develops an intense relationship with Sam, a man struggling with deep wounds of his own. As the summer progresses and their intimacy grows, their pasts begin to crawl to the surface. The film which stars SNL’s very own Bowen Yang among others makes its theatrical debut in the US today.
