Sophie, Grammy-nominated record producer and singer dies in freak accident

Grammy nominated producer Sophie Xeon, 34, slipped and fell to her death on Saturday, 30 January 2021 in an apartment during her stay in Athens. A police spokesperson said that there is no suspicion of foul play.

The Glasgow-born disc jockey, producer and recording artist is a popular transgender woman. Sophie had begun her career in 2009 and gained prominence as one of the contributors to Madonna’s 2015 single “Bitch I’m Madonna.”

She had some other less popular music contributions with her singles such as “Bipp” (2013) and “Lemonade” (2015).

Transgressive, a UK record label that signed Sophie released a statement detailing her death, the company wrote:

Sophie had first revealed her image and vocals when she released the 2017 single “It’s Okay To Cry.” Then, she released her debut album, “Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides” in June 2018 and got a Grammy nomination for best dance/electronic album.

During her career from 2009 to 2021, Sophie had also worked with A.G. Cook, GFOTY, Charli XCX, Vince Staples, Kim Petras, Nicki Minaj, and Namie Amuro.

The New York Times described Sophie as “an innovative producer and performer whose music distilled speed, noise, melody, clarity and catchiness into what would soon be called hyperpop.”
