Google honours Nigerian filmmaker, Amaka Igwe with today's doodle

Google is known for using their doodle (which appears on their homepage) to honour notable people and events.

Now, on 2 January, they are choosing to honour renowned late filmmaker Amaka Igwe who was born on this day in 1963. The doodle shows her smiling in the frame with filmmaking equipment all around her.

Igwe was the owner of Top Radio 90.9 Lagos and Amaka Igwe Studios. She is recognized as one of the filmmakers to help usher in the video film era of Nollywood.

Amaka Igwe gained notoriety as the writer and producer of the award-winning soap, Checkmate, and its offshoot, Fuji House of Commotion.

She also produced several Nollywood movies including Rattle Snake and Violated.

Not only that, the filmmaker won a number of honours during her career. Most prominent among them was her MFR, which was bestowed on her in 2011 by the Nigerian government to recognize her substantial efforts and immense contributions to the creative industry.

Igwe dies in Enugu on 28 April 2014 after efforts to save her from asthma exacerbation proved abortive.
